For years, 2D skeletal animation for games has come with a price on the way in. Meshes and IK need Spine Professional at $379, and you need a license before you ship the game you made. Rigby2D's answer has always been the same: every feature free, every runtime free to ship, open source. 0.5 is the release where that answer covers more than ever.

Download 0.5, let the editor update itself, or open it in your browser. 中文版本.

#What's in 0.5

  • A native Defold runtime. C++, on every platform Defold ships to: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and HTML5, matching the editor frame by frame. Add it as a library and it plays meshes, IK, physics, skins and scenes. How it was built.
  • Sprite sheet export, on the GPU. A packed sheet with JSON for Phaser and PixiJS, a Defold atlas, or PNG frames. Sheets too big for one image split into several, and the export tells you the size before it starts.
  • SVG import. Inkscape and Affinity drawings come in layer by layer, each part where you drew it, ready for AutoRig. It started as a post on r/rigby2d.
  • Generate a mesh from an image. One click traces the art, places the points and builds the triangles. Then bend it.
  • Godot, production-ready. RigbySkeleton2D and RigbyScene2D are out of preview.
  • And more: your own keyboard shortcuts, copy and paste of keys in the timeline, layered PNGs that land in place, opening projects in the browser editor by picking or dropping files, a dialog after every export, and Phaser 4 support.

Seven runtimes now play what you make in Rigby2D, and every one is checked against the same reference: Seven runtimes, one answer.

#Bring your Spine and DragonBones projects

Rigby2D opens Spine exports (JSON and .skel, 3.8 to 4.3) without loss, and DragonBones projects with their atlas. File ▸ Import ▸ Check a skeleton file tells you what carries over before you switch. The guides: coming from Spine and coming from DragonBones.
